On May 7th 1945, Chief-of-Staff, German General Jodl, signed Germany’s unconditional surrender to the western allies and Russia at 2:41am. Operations had to be cease at 1 minute after midnight (GMT) on the 8th of May.

Ruins of World War II

Today May 8th, 1945 is regarded the official day of German
capitulation. The greatest battle of world history ended with about 60 million people dead, and many more wounded and exiled. Europe layed in ruins.

In commemoration of this date, Mickael Therer has created the virtual visit project
Panoramas of WW2 European Landmarks 1945 – 2005.

The World War 2 Panorama Project

He says:
Our intention is to archive in fullscreen QTVR panoramas of the maximum landmarks of WW2 in Europe. The aim of the project is not to be a replacement for existing documentation, or first hand accounts of the events that took place 60 years ago. Instead the intention is to initiate a contemporary look on the heritage that World War II is. The panoramists were solicited individually, the choice was guided by the quality and the sensitivity of their work but also by the will to have a maximum of the involved nations represented.

The project remains open to photographers who would like to join and share panoramas. So far 21 photographers contributed 104 panorama from 16 countries from Russia to spain and the UK to israel.
What arises from the images until now is that a number of somewhat ignored places make their appearance, alongside world famous landmarks. The subjectiveness of the photographers also is important, each one is impregnated of his own culture and his history.
